If you can hear the rain dripping on your ceiling when it rains, call a roof repair contractor as soon as you can to stop the leak. By fixing it early, you might prevent water damage that takes a big bite out of your budget to repair. Here are some steps the roof repair contractor might take to get your roof back in good shape.
Find The Source Of The Leak
Pinpointing the source of a roof leak isn't always easy. The roofer may need to look in your attic for signs of water damage or wet wood. This might narrow down the location of the leak, but since water can roll a long way on a sloped roof, the actual roof damage might be higher up the slope than where the water drip is seen. Your roofer checks the surface of the roof for shingles that have shifted or been damaged. They might also check around the chimney and other areas where flashing is present since leaks are common around these areas of the roof.
Pull Up Damaged Shingles
Once the shingles responsible for the leak are found, the roofer will probably lift them up to find the leaky area on the deck and to see how much of the deck is wet. The roofer might need to pull up several shingles below the damaged ones to see how far the water spread over the deck before dripping into the attic. The roofer may also use tools like a moisture meter or infrared camera to check the roof for moisture and to find the beginning points and endpoints on the deck.
Patch The Hole In The Deck
If the deck has a gap between boards or a small hole in it, the roofer can patch it so shingles can be put back down. They'll have to put new underlayment in the space too since the deck is covered with underlayment and the underlayment is covered with shingles. If a large part of the deck has water damage, the roof repair contractor may need to cut out sections of the deck and replace them with new plywood. Once the hole is patched or new plywood is put on, the roofer can then put down the underlayment and replace the shingles. They'll probably put new shingles in place of the old ones.
Patch Or Seal Flashing
If the leaky area is under flashing, the roof repair contractor follows the same procedure for finding wet decking and replacing shingles. They'll also need to repair or replace the flashing. If the flashing is loose, it can be secured with nails and adhesive. If the flashing has a hole in it, the roofer might apply a patch over the hole or just replace the piece of flashing.

The world around you consists of a lot of built structures. Obviously, these include a lot of buildings, such as schools, homes, and places of business. It also includes roads and sidewalks. But it also includes things you may not think about as often, such as playgrounds, telephone poles, and sewer systems. All of these built structures common and uncommon, are made by construction workers or contractors of some type. They're pretty incredible, their work is pretty incredible, and we are excited to write about both them and their work here on this blog. We hope you enjoy reading it, probably while inside some type of built structure.
