When you have your own septic system, you need to keep the tank and drainfield in good repair or you might end up with a toilet that won't flush without overflowing. A drainfield can be tricky to repair since the problem is often with the soil itself.
Moving the drainfield is sometimes an option, although that is expensive. Plus, you may not have enough space for an entirely new leach field. In that case, you'll need an effective means of repair, and busting up the compressed soil might do the job. Here are some signs your drainfield needs attention and how the repair might be done.
Signs You Might Need Septic Tank Drainfield Repair
An obvious sign of a drainfield problem is when there is sewage and standing wastewater over the top of the drainfield. Wastewater from the septic tank is supposed to drain through the soil and stay completely under the ground. If the water stays on top of the soil, that means something is clogged up.
You might also notice a foul sewer odor in your yard that indicates sewage is backing up somewhere. The grass over the drainfield might also be lush and thick since the roots have access to so much water and nutrients.
Things A Contractor Might Do To Find The Clog
When a drainfield is clogged up, the problem might be with the drains in the field or with the soil. The contractor has to figure out exactly what's wrong because that information will determine how to go about the drainfield repair.
They may need to send a sewer camera into the drains, or dig around in the soil to inspect the pipes. If they check the soil and find that it's clogged, they may try a method that involves busting through the compacted soil so wastewater starts draining again.
Methods For Septic Tank Drainfield Repair
If the clogging is only in the drains, the contractor may hydro jet the drains to clean them out. If the problem is with the soil, the contractor may use air rather than a hydro jet to create holes in the soil that allow wastewater to filter through to the groundwater.
A possible problem with this method is that the holes will close back up. To prevent this, the contractor can pump in beads along with the air. The beads will fill the holes to keep them open, but still, allow wastewater to flow through. The results of this type of septic tank drainfield repair can be instant. You don't need to wait for the soil to repair itself because wastewater starts draining right away, and your septic system is restored to its usual mode of operation.

The world around you consists of a lot of built structures. Obviously, these include a lot of buildings, such as schools, homes, and places of business. It also includes roads and sidewalks. But it also includes things you may not think about as often, such as playgrounds, telephone poles, and sewer systems. All of these built structures common and uncommon, are made by construction workers or contractors of some type. They're pretty incredible, their work is pretty incredible, and we are excited to write about both them and their work here on this blog. We hope you enjoy reading it, probably while inside some type of built structure.
