Kitchen Remodeling Basics: Kitchen Island Elements To Consider

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you have decided to remodel your kitchen, one of the things that your remodeling contractor might ask about is whether or not you want to add a kitchen island to the floorplan. Kitchen islands are popular, but they aren't the right choice for every kitchen. There are a few key things to think about when you're trying to decide if a kitchen island is right for your remodeling project. Here are some of the elements to consider.

Think About How Much Room You Have

One of the first things to think about if you're trying to decide whether or not to add a kitchen island is the amount of space you have in the kitchen. Ideally, you want to have a few feet of open space on all sides of a kitchen island. This is ideal for ensuring maneuverability in the kitchen because you'll almost certainly need to walk around the island on a regular basis.

Space is also important to consider if you'll be putting stools or seats around the island for a breakfast bar. Remember that you should add a couple of feet of extra space around the side where the stools or chairs are so that there's room to sit and get around the island, too.

Decide If You'll Need Plumbing

If you plan to incorporate a cooking surface and sink within the kitchen island, you'll also have to account for running plumbing lines up from under the floor. Under the floor is the most practical approach for an island, but that means having to disrupt the flooring, too. You should ask your remodeling contractor about the easiest way to do this.

Assess Your Kitchen Workflow Before You Decide On Placement

If you've decided that you want to install the kitchen island after all, it's equally important to think about your kitchen workflow before you decide where exactly to place it. Think about the fact that the most commonly accessed kitchen areas are the sink, the refrigerator, and the cooking surface. Make sure that the island doesn't disrupt your path between these things because that could hinder your workflow in the kitchen. Ideally, if you add your sink and cooktop to the island, you'll want to position them near the refrigerator so that everything stays easily accessible.

These are a few of the most important factors to think about if you'll be remodeling your kitchen and think you might want to add an island. Talk to a remodeling company, such as Fagu Construction, today for more help.

Contract Work, Construction Work, and Everything Between

The world around you consists of a lot of built structures. Obviously, these include a lot of buildings, such as schools, homes, and places of business. It also includes roads and sidewalks. But it also includes things you may not think about as often, such as playgrounds, telephone poles, and sewer systems. All of these built structures common and uncommon, are made by construction workers or contractors of some type. They're pretty incredible, their work is pretty incredible, and we are excited to write about both them and their work here on this blog. We hope you enjoy reading it, probably while inside some type of built structure.
